Six centuries of artistic creation
1850-1893 Portugal
Silva Porto belongs to the group of painters who, thanks to a scholarship, had the opportunity to study in France and to paint in Barbizon, discovering naturalistic painting, of which he would become a true mentor. In this depiction of a rowing boat on land, outside a shed, he captures the shadow of the boat on the sand, the silhouette of the fisherman, the tone of the warm earth, simple things that in their fleeting beauty aroused the eye of the painter. The landscape, the anonymous figures, the ordinary objects linked to everyday life, the atmospheric snapshot and a deep sense of understanding of nature, values of the new aesthetic proposals of the naturalist painters, were at the time novelties in the national artistic panorama that broke away from a more formal and academic painting.
