Six centuries of artistic creation
1855-1933 Portugal
This portrait made in 1888 was exhibited in the same year at the 8th Exhibition of Grupo do Leão. It is probably an imaginary portrait, inspired in the taste for the depiction of the collector's figure, common in the 19th century. The free, intuitive, thick, yet fluid, brush strokes, the light and shadow contrasts, the colour balance in the subtle use of ochre, beige, greenish and yellow tones, the pictorial plasticity and the way in which he depicts the facial features and the psychological expression of the "Collector" are revealing of Malhoa's talent who is, by now, an established portraitist.
