Six centuries of artistic creation
1908-1992 Portugal
Vieira da Silva developed an intense visual research around abstraction, in a constant search for new insights into the visible and new pictorial possibilities. In “Le Grand Navire”, a space opens up fragmented into vibrations of light, simultaneously complex and stark, free from the limits of geometric perspectives or vanishing points. In a dense and luminous grid, horizontal, vertical, parallel, diagonal lines and shapes combine, intersecting, opposing, interweaving, in a subtle arrangement of shades of white and grey in contrast with the gradations of blues that horizontally punctuate the composition. Vieira da Silva translates the atmospheric vibration of various elements such as the intangible scintillation of water or the flickering of the air, achieving a composition of great balance in an unmistakable independent pictorial grammar.
