Six centuries of artistic creation
1899-1982 Portugal
Lisbon is one of the main themes in Botelho's painting. A city he sees, imagines, reinvents and paints, suspended in the old quarters. A tranquil, harmonious setting of buildings that articulate on a rhythmic scale, in increasingly stylised and simplified volumes. Botelho represents the castle area seen from the viewpoint of São Pedro de Alcântara. The façades of the houses fit together in an almost cubist geometrisation in overlapping planes. The outlines of the façade of the São Domingos Church and the Rossio Station are recognised, at the top of the hills the Graça church, the towers of São Vicente de Fora, the castle of São Jorge. Botelho captures the autumnal atmosphere, expressed in the tones of the houses, the leafless trees or the expressionist brush strokes of the grey blue of the sky.
